BBC Radio Devon’s Breakfast duo Gordon Sparks and Richard Green visited The Bunker following our PRIZE GIVEAWAY for the breakfast show’s ‘Beat the January Blues’ competition.
The Breakfast pair joined us as part of BBC Radio Devon’s ‘GET ACTIVE MONTH’.
Bunker director, Mark Shaddick headed up Team Bunker. Having ‘the face for radio’, Shaddick’s dulcit tones were beamed across county taking the radio duo through a number of our Multi-Sport activities!
Sparksy, an avid Denver Bronco American Football follower had the opportunity to take FIELD GOALS at Mile High Stadium, fortunately they are not looking for a new kicker at this time!
Next was foot golf at last year’s RYDER CUP VENUE, Albatross in France, then on to the next bay where all was set up and good to go.
The next stage of the challenge involved time trialing a vintage ford escort down a stage of the California highway, with vistas including the Golden Gate Bridge and Malibu it was a real pan Pacific trip!
The tension really hotted up as we next played Wembley Stadium with a 90,000 crowd! PENALTY SHOOT OUT time, with Petr Cech defending the goal, Sparksy, Green, Shaddick and our very own Southampton Saint Tom all with one attempt each. With a semi-pro in the bay there could be only one winner….? Shaddick took victory!! For info, Sparks, Row Z.
The final challenge was an iconic golf hole on the USPGA Circuit, Tournament Players Course. SAWGRASS Hole 17, par 3, 137 yards, known as the Island Green. The tee shot has to carry 125 yards, high good spin numbers so as not to land and run through to the lake at the rear, the green is a moat of blue against the lush green fairways in the distance. A very place, stood on the tee, 9 iron in hand, 1 shot, nearest the pin, a crowd had gathered and only the birds through the speakers could be heard.
Sparks took the challenge with a great swing and a good connection to the ball. With the ball lifted, raising nicely in flight, the green got closer and with all that water between Sparks and the prize, the ball began its descent, this is getting close and …….. splash, another ball in Davy Jones’s locker!
A despondent Sparks picked the same ball up and reloaded, splash goes another, was this going to be a re run of the classic film Tin Cup? No, Sparks held his head in personal shame and Green took the club. Well the turtles, alligators and the Greek God Neptune himself made a killing reselling the Srixon golf balls from this event!
Drum roll please…
The winner was……. The Bunker Indoor Golf & Multi-Sport Centre!
It was a real pleasure welcoming the BBC Radio Devon Breakfast duo to The Bunker Indoor Golf & Multi-Sport Centre. All great fun, a lot of laughter and extremely competitive!
